Mini Nano, Day 23

Lots and lots of notes, and some story bits.

Obi-Wan, five years after The Phantom Menace, about to have an unplanned adventure:

Obi-Wan uses the worst of the invectives he'd learned on his missions on the Outer Rim as he pushes the small freighter he's stolen - he hopes the Order can reimburse the pilot for the loss, but he hadn't had time to procure paid transport if he wanted to survive the mission - to its limits. The navicomp is shot, and he doesn't have time to make the calculations for a hyperspace jump manually. Breathing out a prayer to the Force, he inputs jump perimeters by instinct, and engages the hyperdrive. The ship shudders under another blast of laser-canon fire as the stars blur and elongate in the moment of transition.

Sitting back in the pilot's chair, he lets out a small sigh, though there's little relief to be had. Hyperspace may be safe, but he doesn't know if where he'll come out will be, or how well the ship will survive returning to normal space, after that last hit. It had already been in poor shape beforehand.

At least he hadn't needed to worry about anyone else being put in danger by his rather precipitous departure from the planet. No matter what discussion he'd heard around the Temple at his last visit. Five years a Knight, and everyone's beginning to ask when he plans to take his first Padawan, and never mind that he is usually given missions that aren't at all safe for a youngling - nor intends to give those missions up. No, better he doesn't have one.

Letting out a sigh, Obi-Wan looks over the controls, making sure they wouldn't drop out of hyperspace unless the ship is dragged out by a gravity well, before he goes to check the damage he can assess now. He hopes the thing holds together long enough to get him not only to wherever he's jumping blind, but to get back to Coruscant. The mission is riding on the edge of a knife, and he really doesn't want to see what happens if he fails.

(What he does not know at this point is some very powerful and ancient Force-users are watching him, and plotting having another helper. Mahal is gleefully plotting to sabotage Obi-Wan's ship. And then, adventures in Middle Earth time. *grins, and rubs hands together*

Also, Qui-Gon lives. He is training Anakin. Obi-Wan is still a bit uncomfortable with the abrupt end to his apprenticeship, but not terribly upset at Qui-Gon anymore.)

Mini Nano, Day 22

Two snippets, one for Tolkien, one for Star Wars.

Galadriel and Cýron, Agnu Ra Nûtu AU:

"Lady Galadriel." Cýron inclines her head, though she does not rise from the camp-chair she had been shoved into by an irate healer after she'd limped off the battlefield leaning on her last living brother. If the Lady of the Golden Wood doesn't appreciate it, she doesn't make it obvious, and Cýron doesn't care to look hard enough to find it.

"Cýron." Galadriel smiles, though there is weariness in her eyes that is more than the simple exhaustion most who have been on the battlefield today.

Waving a hand at the unoccupied camp-chair, Cýron winces slightly as the healer puts in another stitch to close the wound which would have crippled her if she'd been of Men. It is enough that it will keep her from leaving to return home until spring is properly arrived even in the northern most reaches of the Anduin's valleys.

"The evil in Dol Guldor is burned out, root and branch." Galadriel sinks into the chair, closing her eyes as she leans into the tall back. "There will be no more incursions into your father's realm from that place."

"I know." Cýron had felt a hint of warmth for the first time in six decades while in the midst of a battle she had originally thought to leave to her brothers. It had earned her the wound currently being stitched, but to know the Greenwood was free of the ice, however long it took for it to thaw, was worth the pain.

Obi-Wan and Force-ghost!Qui-Gon, Jedi Leia AU:

"And you thought I had the easy one to watch over, Master." He shakes his head, a smile creeping across his face as it hasn't in years. This will be an adventure, one worth leaving his exile behind and risking everything for. One last extended mission before he's earned a permanent retirement.

A soft snort answers his thoughts - and perhaps his earlier comment - and Obi-Wan lets himself grin, pushing out of his chair to start gathering what he'll keep. Only what he can carry, and the rest can stay with the farm. He doesn't need to sell it - since he has the money to buy passage at least far enough to find a Rebel contact - but he has no need to keep owning a place he won't be returning to.

"You didn't have to keep your charge from getting himself killed by his own father before he hit puberty." Qui-Gon isn't visible, but he isn't, always. Especially if he's keeping some part of his attention on Leia, wherever she is now. No longer on that backwater Vader had taken her to when he kidnapped her from Alderaan, that much Obi-Wan is certain of.

"I only had to keep him from getting himself killed by the planet he lives on." Obi-Wan opens the chest where he's kept Anakin's old lightsaber alongside his own since soon after he arrived on Tatooine, looking down for a long moment at the silvery hilt. "Without being noticed by Owen."

Mini Nano Day 18 snippet

icon of doom
As It All Burns, Qui-Gon and Ceseri'sado after the little one has had a nightmare:

Sitting up, Qui-Gon picks Ceseri'sado off the floor, letting her bury her face in his shoulder. He should have insisted on going with the others, so she had her creche-mates with her, sleeping together as they had in the Temple. There is enough nightmare fodder without subjecting her to the loneliness of a solitary room.

/No. Here. I'm supposed to be here, with everyone here./ The same stubborn streak he'd noticed before colors the mental words, and Qui-Gon chuckles quietly. He can feel the quiet murmur of the Force that the sentiment is right, though the words are awkward.

"There will be more people if the rest of Queen Amidala's handmaidens survived, and join her here." He rubs Ceseri'sado's back to help her calm, and to disperse the remaining fragments of her nightmare. "It won't be so quiet then."

/Good./ Ceseri'sado shifts, turning her head so she can speak aloud again, a frown on her face. "It shouldn't be this quiet. We shouldn't be alone here."

"And who do you think is missing, little one?"

Jedi Leia, Leia at nine:

Leia curls into as tight a ball as she can, jaw clenched tightly shut against the screams that want to claw their way out, and watches the narrow sliver of doorway she can see from under her bed. Waiting for her father to follow her, to punish her for her defiance again. He wants her to be angry at him, to use that in her training, and she is trying very hard not to let him make her do so. It's hard to remember that he used to be the funny boy - nine, like she is now - Master Qui-Gon remembers meeting.

Emotion, yet peace. Ignorance, yet knowledge. Passion, yet serenity. Chaos, yet harmony. Death, yet the Force.

She keeps repeating the mantra to herself, not daring to even reach for the Force to soothe herself, and lead her father straight to her. He will find her anyway, with so few places to hide, but she doesn't need to make it easy for him.

Mini Nano, Day 17 snippet

icon of doom
Karai and Yoda, Republic Year 945 (55 BBY):

"Arrogance in a Jedi, unbecoming is." Yoda prods him briefly in the ribs with his stick, and Karai huffs. "Pain to Qui-Gon, intended was not."

"To all of us, Master." Karai opens his eyes again, turning his head to look over at Yoda. "Xanatos wasn't just Qui-Gon's Padawan. He was our own. Nephew, apprentice, patient, friend."

Yoda is silent a moment before he lets out a sigh, looking up at the stars Karai had been watching earlier, looking older than Karai has seen before. "Unclear, the Force was, and the best path for the Order, we chose."

"Was it? Or is the Council salving their collective conscious with that lie?" Karai pushes himself upright and turns to better face Yoda. "Is it individuals Falling to the Dark that are the blossoming of corrupt seeds, or is it the fear of that fate the seeds planted in the Order that the Force whispers of?"

"Better Xanatos's weakness exposed now is, than greater harm later it causes." Yoda meets his gaze steadily, though his ears are lowered, some doubt creeping in - already there? - about the decisions that have been made.

"There are better ways of bringing a weakness to light than exposing it to the manipulations of a mad-man." Karai shakes his head, resting his hands flat on the grass beside him to keep himself anchored in the moment, in the present place. "And there are better ways to react to the disaster than covering the Council's collective ass with platitudes and assurances that this is the will of the Force."

No response comes from Yoda for a long moment, closing his eyes as if he is meditating on the best answer to Karai's assertation - though Karai isn't certain he's doing that, or merely avoiding saying anything at all.

"Unclear, the Force was." Yoda's voice is tired, and he doesn't open his eyes. "Uncertain, Xanatos's future had been. The future of Telos, more easily seen. The best negotiator needed was, and the best, Qui-Gon has become."

"You didn't need to sent Xanatos with him. And Qui-Gon isn't the best, just one of them." Karai slides his hands back and leans his weight on them, watching Yoda. "Master Dooku is better - as I'd expect, since he taught Qui-Gon. Master Havrim, though he does tend to prefer more aggressive negotiations. Master Bouri."

"Keep Xanatos here while Qui-Gon is not, we could not." Yoda's ears drop a little more. "To Telos, he would go."

It's like looking into a warped mirror, watching his own body - not him, not his, but someone else who looks terribly like him - slide to his knees in front of a living-again Sidious, expression so utterly lost. Where are his Masters? Where is Obi-Wan, where is Maul? Sithspit and hellfires, where are Yoda and Qui-Gon and the rest of the Council, for that matter?

Taking a deep breath, Anakin wraps his hands around the hilts of both his lightsabers, stepping out of the shadows he seems to have used to walk through a wall. It draws the attention of both his alternate self - there is a flash of surprise and bewilderment that just surfaces through the miasma of anger, sadistic glee, and betrayal that muddies the Force in the room - and Sidious.

"Nice trick, old man." Anakin meets the coldly yellow eyes of the Sith Lord, a smile tugging at the corners of his mouth. He's killed Sidious once, and he can do it again, if he has to. Obi-Wan and Maul are going to be worried when they can't raise him on his communicator, but he'll apologize later.

Sidious studies him with narrowed eyes, his face twisted in a way it hadn't been before, when Anakin had confronted him. "I didn't think the Order would be so bold as to attempt to clone young Skywalker."

Anakin huffs at Sidious's pretence that his alternate - still kneeling, still looking uncertain, but less surprised now - isn't even here. His Masters never would have resorted to such rudeness. "I was born, and I grew up, like any one else, old man. Probably in the same place the kid you have kneeling for you."

He wonders what Sidious did to his alternate, though he's not sure he wants to know. Killed Obi-Wan or Maul, maybe. It's the only thing Anakin can think of that would leave him reeling long enough for Sidious to get hooks in his mind.

Thumbing on one lightsaber, Anakin grins at the flash of surprise that crosses Sidious's face at the crimson blade. Obi-Wan had given him a wounded look when Anakin had built this saber, even though Anakin had already made one that was blue. It seems this Sidious isn't any expecting red any more than the other one.

The surprise isn't enough to keep Sidious from meeting his first strike when he moves, and Anakin easily slides into the rhythm of a duel, reaching out to the Force to let it guide his movements. His other saber he keeps in reserve, though it's a bit of work to keep Sidious at bay without it. It's not time yet.

He has to light it when his alternate self dives into the fight, blue blades clashing, and Anakin hisses, falling back toward the open window. This is not at all what he'd been expecting from his alternate. Couldn't he see the evil in Sidious? Didn't he know that Sidious was threatening the balance of the Force?

Not that the Jedi were entirely better themselves, but Anakin doesn't want to see the Force tip over into darkness, either.

Lashing out with a Force-aided push, Anakin frees himself from the threat of his alternate self for a moment, long enough to leap up into the frame of the window. It's already shattered, so if he must, he can leap - though he can almost hear Maul shouting at him about his lack of planning, and Obi-Wan's muttered oh no, not again.

Anakin can feel the shift in the room just before Sidious brings up a hand, Force-lightning sparking from his fingertips. He hadn't liked it last time, and he grimaces as he twists, bringing one lightsaber up to deflect it. Jumping into Coruscant air-traffic is sounding more appealing now, when his other options are being skewered by himself or being electrocuted by a Sith.

"I'll tell my Master you said hello!" Anakin grins at the moment of confusion on Sidious's face before he steps backward, plummeting down into the empty space around 500 Republica. This is not going at all how he expected it to go.

Masters, I hope you can figure out what went wrong when I killed the old man the first time, and get me out of this.

"Two of you." The voice sounds aggrieved, and somewhat familiar, and Obi-Wan keeps his eyes closed as he tries to place it. "At least I can be certain you didn't have yourself cloned."

"It doesn't mean the Council didn't decide it might be a good idea." That's his own voice, but it can't be his, because he hasn't said a word. "Though you're not supposed to be able to clone Force-sensatives, not if you want to keep the ability to use the Force, anyway."

"A lightsaber does not mean he can use the Force."

There's a sneer in that voice, and Obi-Wan finally places it, his eyes snapping open as he reaches toward his belt and the lightsaber that should be hanging there. It's not, and he glares at the red-and-black demon that had done rather a lot to destroy his life.

It takes a moment to register the room around him in more than a vague sense, and Obi-Wan frowns, not recognizing the architecture as anything on Utapau, nor anywhere else he's been recently. The stone is pale grey, polished smooth on the floor, and carved in an unfamiliar manner on the walls. A pair of arches leads out into a riotous garden, and light pours in through the half-ruined ceiling - though there is a faint shimmer there that suggests it's sealed by a force-field to keep out weather.

There's also another being in the room, who could pass for Obi-Wan if he grew a beard and trimmed his hair back to his shoulders. He could almost think he was looking in a mirror.

"And closed eyes doesn't mean he's unconscious." A wry smile curls the corners of the other man's mouth, eyes dancing with amusement.

(Yes, this was rather inspired by the current challenge on [community profile] fan_flashworks, but I am not posting it there. Some other snippet, that does not encourage the muses to keep a new plot bunny and forget the ones they've already brought me.)

Mini Nano, Day 14 snippet

icon of doom
Have a snippet of me playing with the character meme I've seen over on tumblr recently.

Susan Ivanova, Marcus Cole, Talia Winters, Neroon (Shadowed Stars AU):

1. Who cooks?

Marcus, usually, because he enjoys cooking. Susan, sometimes. Neroon when he wants Minbari cusine. Talia would just order out if the others weren't up to cooking.

This is, of course, assuming they're not eating with the rest of the crew of the Black Star. Then it's often Timov who's cooking, at least if she and Londo and G'Kar are on board. Garibaldi is another popular cook in the crew in general.

2. Who’s the messiest? The cleanest?

Marcus is the one most likely to leave things where he's done with them, much to the annoyance of all of the others. It does mean that he sometimes finds himself handed the laundry basket and told to get everything cleaned. Or locked in the galley with the dishes.

Neroon tends to be the most meticulously neat about his space, and tends to clean up after the others when they don't do so fast enough to suit him. He has to be sat upon, almost, to keep from doing so. Or plied with good liquor.

3. Who fixes the vehicle after a breakdown?

Susan is usually the one to do repairs - either on whatever ground vehicle they've rented, or on the Black Star itself. Although she's far more inclined to suggest stealing another ground vehicle if the one they're using isn't working any longer.

7. Would they go to the beach?

If they could find one they could relax at without getting arrested. They prefer private beaches where clothing is optional, and no one's going to look twice at three humans with a Minbari of the warrior caste.

8. Who knows how to swim? Who doesn’t?

Marcus has known how to swim since he was a child. Susan and Talia learned in the last few months before they left Psi Corps. Neroon still doesn't know how, though he is learning as he has opportunity.

11. Baths or showers? Together or separate? Any bubbles or bubble fights?

Showers, because there isn't enough water ration for baths. Though when they're planet-side, Susan and Talia sometimes take the chance to pay for a hotel room just so they can have a bath.

Neroon showers alone, Marcus is happy to shower alone or with either Susan or Talia. Susan and Talia will shower together, and when they have a chance at a bath, they do tend to do so together.

No bubbles.

12. Can they stand silence? Who talks the most? Who talks the least?

Physical silence is the norm for them half the time, since Susan and Talia are both telepaths, and strong enough they don't need Marcus or Neroon to be telepaths in order to facilitate mental communication between all of them. Mental silence is something none of them particularly like, as it means that Susan and Talia are both unconscious, and on a job, that can be dangerous.

Marcus is the one who talks the most, both aloud and in the telepathic bond that binds the group together. Sometimes to the point that the rest of them would like him to be asleep just so they can have some peace.

Neroon talks the least, physically, but he's more talkative over the telepathic bond. Talia tends to be the quietest in the telepathic bond, but she's also the one most likely to delve into an outsider's mind, and it's understood she sometimes just wants to listen to her lovers in order to wash those contacts away.

Mini Nano, Day 11

icon of doom
Taking a deep breath as she waits for the doors to open in front of her, Leia glances at the young man beside her who had distracted the Imperials at the last moment - had distracted her father as he chased her across the surface of the Death Star, intent on stopping her from destroying his Empire's greatest weapon. A boy, strong in the Force, blond and desert-tan. Come from Tatooine, she'd heard, with his friend to join the Rebellion.

She wonders for a moment if he'd heard of Obi-Wan, but mentally shakes her head, turning her attention back to the great doors that are sliding open to reveal a hall full of uniformed pilots and other personnel, standing in ranks for this ceremony. A hero's accolades and honors to be given to the daughter of the Rebellion's worst enemy - a role that Leia isn't even certain she fills. Her aim had been only to strike a blow in the dangerous game of cat and mouse she's been playing with her father for the last three years, after all.

Taking another deep breath, she steps forward in sync with the boy, feeling the barely constrained joy of the rebels in the Force. It's almost enough to make her believe that she can be seen as a hero. Certainly enough to keep her head held high as she mounts the steps to where the leaders of the Rebellion wait.

Queen Breha of Alderaan, who has lost daughter, husband, and world to the Empire. Captain Solo, defector from the Imperial Fleet and one of those who Leia had been sent after before she broke openly from her father. Mon Mothma, former senator of Chandrila before the Emperor had dissolved the Senate. And a man she doesn't recognize, in the robes of the old Jedi Order, whose Force-presence is warm against her mind.

I've waited a long time to meet you again, Leia.

She keeps her attention on the smiling Breha from long practice at ignoring whispers even as she wonders who the man is that he might have met her before. There are so few she has met before, and none that she recalls who have such a warm presence. Her father's acolytes and the Emperor's Inquisitors all have the same cold feel to them that she associates with the Dark Side.

Who are you?

Leia ducks her head as Breha brings the first of the medals to her, settling the wide ribbon neatly around her neck. Lifting her head, she takes a moment to look at the Jedi again, studying his face to try placing him within her memory. It evokes nothing, not even the faintest glimmer of recognition.

You already know my name, even if you don't know me.

Beside her, the boy ducks to receive his own medal, and Leia focuses on the ceremony again as she wrestles with the uncertain thought that the Jedi is probably Obi-Wan Kenobi. Her Master's last apprentice when he'd lived, and the man her father hates above almost all others - only Emperor Palpatine has earned a greater share of his hatred. Leia's own feelings on the man are far more conflicted, having tales from both her Master and her father about him.

Turning in unison with the boy - she has to find out his name, indeed should have before this - Leia faces the men and women who have risked far more than she has to bring the Empire down. Their applause feels strange to accept, though she smiles through it. All she wants to do right now is leave, to return to her stolen fighter and hide in the cockpit, not accept the congratulations and good wishes of men and women she doesn't even know.

Mini Nano, Day 10 snippet

icon of doom
Since there's exactly one story snippet today - most of today's words were headcanon notes for Valorum and Dooku in the seven AUs I have. One of which had not worked its way out of being just notes until today. (It's not a completely gender-swapped AU, but several of the primary characters are gender-swapped. Among them, Valorum. Which I hadn't planned until I was working on headcanon today.)

Supreme Chancellor Finis Valorum, at an interview, roughly a year and a half before the events of TPM:

It would be easy for her to remain silent against the whispers that say her lack of spouse or visible lover is because she is involved with a Jedi - a particular Jedi. That her choice of diplomat in the most delicate situations is colored by her affection for Qui-Gon, that she is choosing based on emotion rather than who is best for the job. They are accusations she's heard before, and not solely about her and Qui-Gon.

Equally as easy would be getting insulted, affronted, angry about those whispers, if she were inclined to do so. It would be just as damaging, and pointless. She could speak calmly and rationally about how they couldn't be true, and there are many who wouldn't believe her. Getting visibly upset just makes it worse.

It's not expected, when she's asked by a holo-news reporter, that she smiles, and chuckles, and asks if anyone has holos, because she's never seen a Jedi without his robes. A real Jedi, anyway; she has seen those awful movies and serials about heroic and virile Jedi, in all their naked glory.

"If you can't come up with something new, you might start to worry about your career. Everyone's heard the rumors about me and Master Jinn time and again, and no one's ever had any proof."

"There has to be some truth to them if they keep being brought up."

The reporter is persistent, but Valorum simply smiles, shaking her head slightly, as if disappointed. "Reporters pulling old stories out and shaking them off is just a sad remark on the moribund state of our Republic's media. There are a myriad other matters which you could report on, and all you can think of is 'we haven't harangued the Supreme Chancellor on her love life in half a year', and drag out old, tired, worn-thin rumors."

"And the speculation that you and Master Jinn are secretly married?"

"I first heard that one thirty years ago. You might want to ask the Jedi Order to clarify its rules regarding their members and marriage, as well as the recording of such. They can confirm - or deny - the status of any of their members."

Not that Valorum expects the reporter will bother looking - none of them ever do. It's too easy to find information to refute their wilder stories, and they want the most salacious and scandalous gossip to come from them first. Regardless of the veracity of their information or sources.

Mini Nano, Day 9

icon of doom
Obi-Wan would like not to get shot, but it's not his day (also, Maul said he'd do nothing... except he sorta did do something, just not a whole lot):

At the other end of the table is the young man who had offered to arrange the meeting, and though Maul still finds working with Omega disconcerting, he has his uses. No one looks twice at him, despite his good looks, and many forget they've even met him.

"I didn't think you worked with the Jedi, my Lord." Omega only briefly glances at Maul, and Maul smiles at him, sharp and amused. "Unless you have some other reason to bring that sort of danger in here."

Show Omega who he's glaring at, apprentice.

Maul watches Omega's face as he listens to the shift of fabric behind him. The rage and hate that flashes across the boy's face is entertaining, though the blaster raised and aimed at Kenobi may be less so. "He is to remain alive, Omega. I'm not done with him yet."

The blaster is lowered slightly, Omega turning his glare on Maul instead for a long moment before he looks back to Kenobi, firing. There's a grunt of pain from behind Maul, and a burst of glee from his apprentice at whatever injury Omega has done to Kenobi. "There. Not dead. But I want him when you're done with him."

Mini Nano, Day 8 snippets

icon of doom
Word count goal made, if only in the last half-hour. Only worked in two AUs today, so snippets from each.

More Sabé/Padmé on Serenno:

"None of the others left Naboo with me." Padmé is shaking, and Sabé supports her to a couch next to the empty fireplace. "I don't even know if they're alive."

"If they are - and I'll believe they are until I see their bodies - they'll escape and they'll join you again." Sabé rests her hands on Padmé's shoulders a moment, feeling the tension under her fingers. She knows each death had struck Padmé deeply, though she always had the strength to walk away without looking back when it was needed. "You are our heart, our Queen, and our commander, Padmé. For you, we would do anything."

She doesn't say that without Padmé, they would break, because it's not a truth Padmé needs to hear. Without their heart, they would still fight, they would still seek to see her will done, her ideals realized, but they would be dying a long death, not living.

And then Maul & Obi-Wan & Eea (Sith Ascendant: Into Shadows):

"My second cloak should fit you well enough, Kenobi." The Sith smile briefly, as his apprentice turns back to the closet, pulling out another black cloak that matches their own. "Wear it."

"Or you'll do what?" Obi-Wan crosses his arms, not willing to trade his servicable brown cloak for the black one being pushed on him.

The sharp, amused smile the Sith gives him is worrying. "I will do nothing."

"Your apprentice?"

"Will do what I tell her." The Sith continues to watch him, waiting patiently for him to make his decision.

(Yes, Obi-Wan can figure out that Maul saying he'll do nothing is not a good sign, but stubbornness carries the day.)

Mini Nano, Day 7 snippets

Sabé & Padmé, reuniting on Serenno:

No face-paint or headdress, no uniform, none of the elaborate robes and dresses that Sabé had once helped her with, only a simple tunic and trousers, her hair braided back from her face. Her dark eyes don't focus on Sabé's face, and for a moment, Sabé feels a cold terror wrap around her heart, until she is close enough to be certain Padmé is tracking her motion, even if she cannot see everything.

She doesn't have a chance to kneel at her Queen's feet before Padmé's hands are reaching for her, clinging tight to her cloak and pulling her in. Sabé wraps her arms around Padmé, feeling a silent sob shudder through her best beloved's too-thin frame. "What happened, Padmé?"

Padmé's voice is as whisper soft and horse as Sabé's own when she replies, telling her everything that has happened since the birth of the Empire from the ashes of their beloved Republic. Sabé tightens her arms when Padmé speaks of the attack on Naboo, the forced flight and her fears for their people.

"But we live." Padmé's voice strengthens as she pulls back, pressing Sabé's arms away so she can stand on her own. "So long as we live, and we can fight, the Republic is not entirely dead. Sleeping, injured and bleeding, but not dead."

Mini Nano, Day 6 snippets

icon of doom
Sabé, on Coruscant:

None of us will be safe, and those who spoke against the Emperor the least of all. I cannot ask any of you to do anything more than you are willing, nor more than I will myself risk.

There had been no question, no hesitation in any of them, taking the new instruction to heart. None to keep at the side of their Queen - no matter she no longer sits upon the throne, nor has for some years, ever will Padmé Amidala be their queen. Their heart and their commander, for all that she will never call herself such.

Sidious is having a very bad day:

Another rumble draws his gaze back to the Temple itself, a snarl of thwarted intent escaping him as spires gracefully implode, dust spreading out from ancient stone and newer duracrete from the sides of the ziggurat as well. Implosion to seal a tomb for those who had remained, lights spreading like stars gone nova as they steal his victory and revenge from him.

One apprentice vanished, another turned against him, and a third stolen before he could more than begin his careful corruption. Now his plans for the Jedi turned into dust and ash, as above him, he can sense, despite his planning, that not all of the ships will be stopped. Indeed, one he would want destroyed most is already punching past the cruisers and making for where they might slide into hyperspace and away from his grasp.

How had this been hidden from his view, kept from making a ripple in the Force until he could not prevent it?

Padmé and Dooku on Serenno:

"You look like you’re about to fall over, Commander."

The title used makes her flinch, and she tightens her grip on the stone under her hands to keep herself upright. It isn’t what she wants to be remembered as, to be known as, but it seems to eclipse her time as Queen of Naboo or as Senetor for the Chommell sector before the galaxy had become a hell that she barely recognizes any longer.

A quiet laugh escapes her at the thought. Not the galaxy, just the Republic she had loudly spoken for. The shining jewel of civilization turned to dross and slag, while those who she’d always blamed for war hold onto more of the democratic ideals she loves more than her life.

"I am fine, Count Dooku." She doesn’t turn to look at her host, preferring the blurred green view of the gardens. "I am assured that I will heal completely, given time."

Maul and Obi-Wan, location unknown, have been having a very annoying decade and a half, and would like not to have to deal with each other much longer, thank you Force:

Red meets blue in a brief clash and hiss, before they each step back, sabers going dark once more. Circling again, another strike and response, lightning flickers of color casting aside masks, and casting faces in stark contrasts.

When Maul leaves his saber-staff humming after a strike, Obi-Wan matches him, and moves into the next steps of the dance, Force sliding along his skin and through him. With each circuit of the ring, they push themselves a little faster, weaving a net of brilliant blue and red, each aware of the danger if they slip and courting that danger. Certainly when this - whatever this is - ceases to drive them, they will do their best to destroy each other.

It ends with his saber at Maul’s throat, and the deactivated blade of Maul’s saber-staff resting just below his ribs, mutual destruction assured if they continued to move.

Five Days of Mini Nano snippets

icon of doom
Since I've been posting the snippets to tumblr, I should post them here, too. :)

Day 1 (Star Wars, Emperor Dooku AU, Anakin and tiny!Leia and tiny!Luke, storytelling):

"And what story did you ask your father to tell you?" Padmé carries him back over to the low table Anakin and Obi-Wan were sitting at, with Leia curled up in her father’s lap, leaning against him with her head on his shoulder.

"The story about how Uncle Qui-Gon met the Empress." Leia shifts, poking Anakin in the arm when he opens his mouth, looking up at him with solemn eyes. "You promised."

"I did." Anakin smiles ruefully, as Padmé settles on the cushion left empty between him and Obi-Wan, Luke immediately moving to lean into Anakin’s side. It’s a familiar sight, whether Anakin or Obi-Wan, or even herself. "I was told the story shortly after I’d come to Coruscant."

"After the Jedi turned you away?" Luke frowns, and Leia reaches out to poke her brother in the forehead.

"Yes." Anakin glances over at Obi-Wan, something passing between them that Padmé can never quite grasp, like smoke between her fingers. "But that’s not the story."

Day 2 (Star Wars, Jedi Leia AU, Vader and verytiny!Leia):

Vader doesn’t even dare pace the cabin of his private shuttle, cradling the small infant in his hands who has been staring at him since she woke, small face crumpled into an expression of utter confusion. At least she is not screaming, as she had when she first opened her eyes, and saw him. He wishes he could remove his mask to see her with his own eyes, but he doesn’t dare do so.

In time, perhaps, but not now, with his flesh still healing from Mustafar, and her so very young and vulnerable. No. It will be enough now that he has rescued her from the hands his traitorous former Master had delivered her to, and can find a more appropriate caretaker to watch over her when he cannot be present. Although he hasn’t quite decided on who that might be, since he must be able to trust them not to reveal her existence or location to either Sidious or to Kenobi.

Day 3 (Harry Potter/Stargate Atlantis, City of Magic AU, Millicent Bulstrode and John Sheppard):

There’s silence behind him, and he turns, looking at the set expression on Millicent’s face. “Why didn’t you even leave something that might have given us a clue?”

"Because until Raxus, you didn’t need to know."

"I need to know now."

"You could have a library the size of Atlantis herself, and I still wouldn’t be certain you’d even know what to look for." Millicent crosses her arms over her chest, her jaw set. "I certainly wouldn’t trust you wouldn’t be injured or killed looking for an answer. Not all magic is kind, even when it’s beneficial."

Day 4 (Star Wars, Emperor Dooku AU, Dooku and Criju Berles (OMC, non-Jedi Force-user)):

"It is not often the Jedi show a great interest in our traditions, and most who have are those born to our own while within the Jedi Order’s influence." Berles doesn’t look over at Dooku, keeping his attention outwardly focused on the two younglings circling each other. "I find it interesting that you are curious enough to ask."

"There is no reason not to seek out further knowledge of the Force, regardless of whom I might learn it from." Dooku glances at Berles only briefly, before returning his gaze to his Padawan. "If there are not requirements in learning that would interfere in my responsibilities."

Berles chuckles, rich and deep, waving a dismissive hand. “You are too experienced for a student, though I would not think you are yet worth the title of Stera, even if you are Kenar. Venrof, journyman, still learning but not yet achieved true mastery in the Force.”

Dooku tilts his head to acknowledge the fact. “I am only a Knight, not yet considered a Master when I am yet on my first Padawan.”

Berles hums a moment, then silent briefly before he speaks again. “A flaw, as I see it, in the Jedi thought. How can you teach another when you have yet to master yourself?”

"How can you be certain of your mastery if you are unable to provide another the guidance to follow in your footsteps?" Dooku knows there are Jedi who have not taken Padawans until after they’ve been declared Masters by the Council, but they are more often the exception than the rule, particularly more recently.

Day 5 (Star Wars, Jedi Leia AU, tiny!Leia and Force-ghost!Qui-Gon):

"Did father kill you?"

"No." Qui-Gon takes a breath, smiling sadly at the thought Leia would not know the smiling, laughing, bright boy Anakin had once been. Might never see the good in him unclouded by Vader’s cold rage and bleak hatred. "He was still a little boy, then. Only a little older than you are now."

"Someone killed you, though." Leia looks up at him, her brow drawing down in a small frown as she rubs the fingers of one hand over the other. "Father is sad and angry when he talks to you."

Or at least trying their damndest to make me threaten to drown them in their own tears or something. Because blast it, I did not intend to be writing two separate death scenes. Especially since one is over a decade past where I have anything actually written out already. Possibly most of two. *mutters about stupid heroics, misdirection, and punching Force-ghosts*

On the other hand, at least I'm certain now that Daerja is going to the Qui-Gon/Obi-Wan place.

...because having a map that I can actually use without making myself nuts is a good thing. And I think I’m going to sit down and figure out distances between planets I actually use in the stories so I have travel times that I can then ignore or use as I see fit.

The other notes… I have a sixth AU to poke at now? Dunno if it’ll get past notes and concept writing, but still. AU number six for Star Wars. Whee! (I have that many AUs in some other fandoms, but usually they don’t evolve quite this close together when they get past three or so.)

So, anyway. Post-RotS, Vader finding out about Leia, and kidnapping her, and then there will be Qui-Gon Force-ghost poking until Vader convinces him that really, he’s probably the only one he’d trust with his daughter (he might have once trusted Obi-Wan, but not now). And so there will be Leia raised by a Force-ghost!Qui-Gon, with irregular visits from Vader, and no Sidious finding out until Vader is sure Leia is strong enough to help him kill Sidious and rule the galaxy with him.

I have no idea what that is going to mean for Luke when things get to the point of ANH and the rest of the OT. Other than potentially very entertaining.

It will look awesome when it's done, for someone who hasn't done this sort of digital art with anything people ever, and hasn't done art like this in over a decade. Awesome, I tell you.

And if I can get through this without stabbing my laptop in frustration, I might do the art for the other segments of the backstories this way too. Which means that they're only going to come out once a month, because this stuff is not to be rushed unless I want to kill things.

*eyes her muse* Eea and Maul are either being suicidal muses, or they have a trick up their sleeve they're not telling me yet. I suspect the latter, though, as Maul has been decidedly annoyed lately, and has been attempting to be crafty. I'm not sure how much he's succeeding, but still.

I...

Think that if you have a body of your very own, you have the right to decide what to do with that body. And by body of your own, I mean breathing air outside the confines of another body. Inability to articulate those decisions does not negate the right. Inability to conceptualize the choice does not negate the right. Being legally dependent on someone else does not negate that right.

Think that everyone has a right to access non-personally-identifiable information on any subject that they wish.

Think that being denied options (socially, professionally, medically, legally, or in any other situation) because of skin color, gender, ethnicity, religion, mental or physical ability, sexual orientation, weight/shape, profession, or anything else that they chose or cannot chose, is something that is wrong.

Think that people should be able to have sex with any consenting adult they care to, without being shamed or criminalized for it. I also think people shouldn't be stupid about it, and should make sure all parties involved are aware, and those directly participating at the time are definitely consenting, because communication is important.

Am bloody adamant that consent is only consent when it is explicitly given, and there is no implied consent. If someone is unable to give consent, there is no consent - regardless of why they are unable to give consent.

Think that all bodies are worth being proud of, no matter their shape, weight, level of activity, physical prowess or lack of, whether missing parts or having extra, or any other manner of differing from what someone thinks of as normal.

Think that children are capable individuals who have not finished developing, and while needing someone to help provide for their needs and to help them with choices they might struggle to understand because of their level of development, they have every right to decide who they are for themselves.

Do not know everything. Cannot know everything. Cannot fix, nor should attempt to fix, everything around me that I think is wrong - and may be wrong about it being wrong.

Know that my opinions are not always acceptable in the social mainstream (for me, this means the United States, and with my tendency to travel, not just one region of the U.S., either), and try very hard not to care if they are. But also try to remember that some people could get very dangerous in expressing why they think I should not have those opinions, and so I should pay attention to my audience.

Think that sometimes whatever this social mainstream is can go take a flying leap, because I'd rather believe all that I have said than accept the underlying and unspoken message that I grew up with and didn't even notice or think about for two and a half decades.

Know I still have work to do in acknowledging my own privilege, and in trying to figure out what that is, and how it effects me. And I probably always will, because some of what it means will change over time.

I am...

Female-bodied, and comfortable with it

Gender: Is not binary, and I am not female just because I have breasts and lack a penis.

Aromantic: I don't want the romantic intimacy, even when I want physical, intellectual, emotional, or spiritual intimacy.

Sex: Not often, and orgasm is unnecessary when other people are involved. If other people are involved. I'd rather not, most of the time, because sexual intimacy is also something I'm not interested in at this time, and may never be interested in again.

Pale skinned, pale eyed, and red of hair - and identify as human, not white. (Yes, this is something I have the privilege of doing, because society sees me as the default color.)

Neurodivergent in a currently not-officially-labeled manner (diagnoses cost money that I don't have). ADHD, PMDD, with behaviors that land on the autism spectrum and some other symptoms that would usually come up while discussing PTSD.

Introverted in that dealing with people takes energy, especially large groups or people I don't know.

Social in that without regular human contact in the form of people I know, I can get downright broken.

Extroverted in that I don't always know what I'm thinking until I talk about it.

Deal with skin-hunger on a regular basis (need for physical human contact that includes skin-to-skin contact).

A reader, a writer, a sometimes artist with pencils and computer, a geek about history, science, fiber, words, science fiction, fantasy, alternate worlds, baking, and cooking, just to name a few things.

Single and prefer it that way. I do like having friends and cuddle-buddies, but see the aromantic part for why single and keeping it that way.

Living on the same property as my parents and unlikely to change that so long as they are alive, for longer than a few months at a time.

In love with water, in that if I could, I'd find a way to go swimming every damned day, so long as I don't have to go alone.

Always in pain, even if you can't tell for looking, and I can't tell without taking painkillers to make it stop.

5'3" and 190lbs, but the pain's been around since I was 5' nothing and 100lbs soaking wet with my clothes on.

Pro-privacy, pro-choice, pro-public option health care, pro-internet neutrality.

Lacking a college degree or a desire to have one, but that doesn't mean I don't learn or don't want to learn.

Intelligent, if not always wise, and not always aware.

Able to pass for neuronormative for a limited length of time, pass for able-bodied for a limited length of time, able to pass for heterosexual cis female if I keep my mouth shut. Sometimes I do so, because I do not have the energy to try, once again, to explain and justify my existence otherwise.

Why am I posting this?

Because I'm reading too much or not enough, or both. Because I am tired of passing for what I'm not. Because I really don't always know what I'm thinking before I say it - aloud or in words on a screen.

Because I can. Because I need to. Because I am tired of being afraid of myself and the world and everything in between, but I have not a damned clue right now how to stop being afraid.

I shouldn't need a reason, but I always feel the need to find one. And maybe this is just another way of trying to justify my existence, but this is one I can live with right now.

(There are many other subjects that could have ended up on this list of things, but this is where my brain was at today, and what I can deal with right now without feeling overwhelmed. Particularly since I am not locking this to those on my access list.)

Ok, so there were actual notes taken, too, but mostly link-hopping through Wookieepedia. There are fun things in there, but damn is it distracting. Especially since now I'm trying to work out if I want to play with some of the bits and pieces from that, or leave them be (well, ok, stuff that relates to those in the movies I might use, but for those who aren't in the movies at all? I dunno).

Of course, knowing what's there that's extra canon I can use for the AU I'm building, or ignore entirely, is a good thing. Just a bit overwhelming. Some of the extra characters are interesting, and I want to use them (especially the women; I've been more likely to just hit the back button on male, especially human male, characters), others, not so much. (And I'm still shuffling some of them around, because I know what my muses want for the central core of characters for this AU, at least up through TPM.)

I have worked out some of how I'm going off into AU with parts of TPM. Now I just need to keep from wandering back over to Wookieepedia to do more research/world-building/note-taking stuff for a while. And work on the story. Or maybe work on the backstory bits for others of the main set of characters I'm building. Particularly since having the backstories for two of them might come in handy while working on the how of the AU TPM.

Looking for a beta...

icon of doom
... and I have posted to [community profile] betaplease, without any nibbles. Does anyone on my list want to beta-read a 10k Star Wars fic, or know other places to post a request for a beta-reader that are fandom-specific?

The story in question is set prior to The Phantom Menace, and my canon is the first release on the DVDs for the prequel trilogy, and a very few random bits picked out from Wookipedia, as I do not have any Star Wars books. The primary character is an original alien, and a woman of color, roughly of an age with Qui-Gon Jinn. The only canon characters to make their appearance so far are Qui-Gon Jinn and Obi-Wan Kenobi, the rest of the cast are originals.

10,000+ words, in 15 ficlets spanning fifty years, to right before TPM. Rated teen for non-graphic violence, frank discussion of sex and procreation, one fade-to-black scene. Mentions of character death, grief and coping with grief, mourning customs, and familial rejection. A few scenes of fluffy cuteness with tiny!Jedi.

I am particularly looking for someone to double-check continuity despite large gaps of time left unexplored, readability, and consistency of characterization/character development. Familiarity with the movies is nice, but not absolutely necessary.

*thumps head lightly on desk*

Thank you people who commented, for judging a woman of color by standards that are entirely different from the concept of honor and fair play that she grew up with and operates by - and then call her a cheat and dishonorable because she didn't play by your rules. Thank you for telling me that my character is a bad person because I didn't write her to the cultural standards you grew up with, and doesn't obey your ethnocentrism.

....

Actually, on second thought - well, first, really - fuck you two and your ethnocentrism, and possibly racism, because I haven't gotten negative comments on any of the female characters I've written who aren't explicitly of color, regardless of the behavior they engage in - and some of them act far worse, including being actively evil.

*takes a deep breath*

I was far more polite in my responses to the comments that are now annoying me, but really. At least the first of the two was more questioning how the ethics they were commenting on worked, and why the behavior was perfectly within the bounds of honor. The second, that I woke up to? Straight out judgement call, and dude, no. Fuck no. And considering Themba is the only character I've noted as being of color - there are others I consider of color, but haven't made it blatant - I can't help but think that part of it is because she is a woman of color (or maybe because she's paired off with Éomer?).

I think once I have the Star Wars WIP finished, I am going to go prod at my muses for War-Consort and do more with the world-building on that. Because maybe I'm wrong, and it's just that I haven't posted enough of the story with the world-building elements, and not because the main character is a woman of color.

RIP, Robin Williams

icon of doom
In some things, I'm extremely picky about what I'll watch or read or listen to, because most of the material that falls under the label is stuff that I don't like. Comedy is one of those things - and Robin Williams is one of the very few people whose work in the genre I not only like, but love. And he was so much more beyond a comedian, and it is a sadder world that will not see more from him.

Requiem in pace, Robin Williams. You will be missed.

List of stories under the cut, for the most part. The story posted most recently is... I'm not really sure what to warn for, if I warn at all, but it is part of Agnu Ra Nutû, it is dealing with Denethor as a female-bodied male, and Boromir finding this out (at the age of ten, by accident and as a result of that accident).

Also, I updated Asset with a new chapter back at the beginning of the month.

*hides from her LJ*

Mostly this is so it crossposts, and I don't have to go over there. I thought the fact that it never stops loading anymore, even when there's nothing that I am going to see that still needs loading, was bad enough - in fact, that actually is really worrying, because what the hell are they running in the background that never fully loads?. They've changed the format again, and it's not as useful or as intuitive, and I can't easily find my "I want the damned links to find all the bits in default on the left, not across the blasted top in drop-down menus" option (because I hate drop-down menus showing up when I don't need them), if it even exists anymore, and when I tried to switch back to the old version, it logged me out and then when I logged back in, I had the fucking useless broken new version again.

Yeah. There will be people I do not see anymore because I'm not going to go back there, and there's a community that I had not intended to abandon that I will not be helpful on (however, there is another mod, and I will make sure she has everything for the community).

Although, I haven't done much other than crosspost there in a couple years because DW has proven easier and doesn't change things without warning (this newest change is something that's not even been announced to LJ's news blog after the fact, damn their hides).

Random writing thought

icon of doom
It is an interesting challenge to write a story where one of the POV characters never refers to himself by name. Doesn't even think of himself as having a name. And not everyone else has the same reference for him.

Also, he tends not to think of other people as having names. Titles, references, but not names, as such.

Writing Update of sorts

icon of doom
*blinks* Since the last time I did this, I have posted 74 new stories in Fireside Tales. I am not listing them individually, because that would get too long.

I have started five new series, three of them Tolkien-verse:

Road to Mundburg - a Boromir/Éowyn series, vaguely canon until Amon Hen except Éowyn goes to Gondor to marry Boromir. Boromir lives.

Agnu Ra Nutû - female-bodied-male-gendered!Thorin, Thorin/Nori, different people die in BoFA, King Sigrid of Dale, dead Bard, dead Legolas, Thranduil has four children (one a daughter). Female-bodied-male-gendered!Denethor, Denethor/Finduilas, Boromir and Faramir have different biological fathers, Faramir and Denethor are closer. Various other changes.

Queen's Mercy - fun with Norse mythology. Frigga, Loki, Fenrir, others.

First Born - original 'verse, Lucifer, Michael, Gabriel. Others as needed. Four dimensional chess.

Requiem Court - future apocalyptic AU, weird pairings, rare pairings, angst, metaphysics, snarking, crazy people. Gollum being a cannibal. Smaug having fits. Galadriel being Galadriel. Magic, shadows, mist, and danger. Death and violence and fire. Thranduil being a bad-ass soldier-king type whose home goes up in smoke, and Thorin being the one with a stronghold and is being a rat bastard to his down-on-his-luck not-enemy-not-friend.

And today's postings:

He lives it more deeply than before, two telepaths almost constantly in the back of his mind, bridging the gap between his mind and Marcus's so they have that same closeness.

Other:

I have updated Out of the East, and added more links and stuff to the Appendices for the combined AU (Flame of Durin and Gaearon Rhûnen).

Hopefully I will remember to post writing updates a little more frequently, if only for the fact I'm posting an average of a story a day to Fireside Tales, and I have longer stories I'm updating, too.

Meme!

Comment here if you want to play, and I will give you three-six couples that I associate with you, and you make an entry in your journal talking about those couples and fics that you wish the universe would write for you.

I commented to [personal profile] idontlikegravy and she gave me:

Nori/Thorin

My muses like to throw things at me that I have no idea what to do with at first, and this started as one of those things. Just. In the AU I had not intended to write more of, it worked, and not because of the other changes I made in that AU. (Agnu Ra Nutû, for those interested.)

I like a Nori who is unapologetic about what and who he is, and isn't going to change for anyone, not even those he loves. I like a Thorin, who while he has all the issues of Durin family FEELS, isn't going to go all sappy or soppy over anyone. Love between them, but neither of them are going to let being in love with each other stop them from doing what they have to do - and making the hard decisions, if it comes to that.

Seeing more of that? Would be awesome. And if it includes a Nori who isn't monogamous, or a third with them, I wouldn't object to pretty much any dwarf who isn't closely related (or non-dwarf characters) being the one involved.

Boromir/Éowyn

The fascination of this pairing is that it can be done without disturbing canon too much - although I will use just about any excuse to keep Boromir alive, and this provides one that works very well for me. And Éowyn isn't going to let being in Gondor and married to Boromir stop her from being a warrior and a damned good one at that. Boromir is (probably) not fool enough to try to stop her from keeping in practice, though he's going to do his best to make sure she never has to use that practice with blade and bow and horse for war.

It's also fun because it's a rare pairing (like the other two here, actually *smiles*), and so most of those who write it are writing stuff that's pretty good. Still, I wish there were just more of it, no matter if it's fitted around canon and Boromir dies, or canon is used as a reference while building an AU around the pairing.

Willow/Methos

I don't think it works with early Willow, but later Willow, the one who is exploring her magic more completely, and who has seen and touched darkness, it works so very well. She's the strength to see Methos's darker side and not flinch away. She's also intelligent enough and powerful enough to intrigue Methos, and that's enough to start from.

Although the AU I'm working with this pairing in skews more toward them as a non-romantic-romance, if that makes sense? There's physical attraction, there's compatibility of minds, there's a friendship, there's even love, but they're never really in love, as it were. Which is honestly the sort of relationship I have the most fun with, anyway.

I'd love to see more of post-series Willow and post-series Methos getting together, even just as friends, and how the relationship develops. Though I'm not terribly interested in them having any sort of shared info-dump (Methos telling Willow about Immortals, Willow telling Methos about demons), but more an unfolding of the exchange of knowledge over time. And more with Willow's magic interacting with Methos's Quickening, and how other people see that working.

Adventures In Food

icon of doom
Yesterday's dinner was:

Red and brown rice cooked with spices (garlic, toasted onion, ginger, nutmeg, cinnamon)
Portabella mushrooms layered with bacon and cheese (I wanted to do basil, but there was no joy on the fresh basil)
cucumbers (sliced thin and served as-is)

Tonight's dinner is:

Brown rice, cooked with spices and lime juice (same spice mix as yesterday)
Chicken marinated in lime juice, fresh grated ginger, minced garlic, nutmeg, toasted dried onion, and enough water to make sure the thighs were completely submerged.
Salad from a kit which has chopped cabbage, celery, onion, carrot, and almonds

The rice together with the chicken tastes like something I'd encounter at an SCA feast, and is very nommy. The cinnamon isn't a strong note, but it's also not something easily missed - and this with a very little cinnamon. The lime is very strong, but not overpoweringly so. I can't actively taste the garlic or the ginger or the onion or the nutmeg, but they're not meant to be distinct flavors, but part of the gestalt of flavor.

Writing Update

icon of doom
I've forgotten to post for a few weeks. *shrugs* Oops? I've also not posted a list of the recently posted stuff in a month. Which, considering that I have roughly a story a day since... Is going to be a long list.

I've updated Burning Bright (link leads to the newest chapter). I make no promises about another update on that one before another four months has gone by. I've also added a conversation between Síndri and Tílithluin, and Feathers With Edges to Sparks From Mahal's Forge.

There is a new WIP posted in the Flame of Durin AU:

Winter and Summer (5321 words) by Morgyn Leri

Additional Tags: Alternate Universe, Dwarf Women, Non-Binary Gender
Series: Part 2 of Flame of Durin
Summary:

Nori is a well-traveled thief, lifting the riches of those who have more than they need from the Ered Luin to the great trade hubs of southern Harad. He has seen places without winter or summer, mountains without snow, and places where water is as precious as gold. Monuments of fused stone that hum with fire, caravans of salt and of spice.

He has met all manner of Men and Dwarrow, spoken in languages rarely heard in the West, and he has stolen from them all. Lied to save his skin, or to give an accomplice time to escape, betrayed the truth to keep himself whole and running one more day. Traded favors and money and stolen goods for all manner of things.

The last time he dared travel the southern trade cities, he left behind a pair of sapphires and a favor unfilled, promising himself he wouldn’t spend winters so far south, no matter how fine the weather or rich the marks. Years later, he breaks his promise to himself, and dreads what might be asked of him when he once again sees those sapphires.

Writing Update

icon of doom
In the interests of trying to remember to post more regularly, I will attempt to post a writing update once a week. *crosses fingers* Let's see how well I remember. This is also an experiment to see if posting about the stories keeps me on track to finish them.

I have, as usual, probably far too many projects going at once, but I'd get bored if I didn't. Currently the connected AUs Flame of Durin and Gaearon Rhûnen are still my biggest focus, with a half-dozen stories between them in progress. Granted, not with an even spread, but that's ok.

List of stories and progress on themCollapse )

This week's goals? Get more words on Kings and Princes and on Caravan, get the scene edited on Burning Bright, and get another 1k on the chapter for Zâbad. Not terribly ambitious a goal for the week, though there are other things that need done as well that have nothing to do with writing.

A Dinner Fit For a Hobbit

icon of doom
Tonight's dinner is fit for a hobbit (or even a company of dwarves, if I made more of it). On the other hand, none of these recipes is meant for one person, so if cooking for yourself, expect leftovers.

All of this is made from scratch, including the stock in the Mushroom-Ginger Soup, so expect to take a couple hours (not counting the stock-prep, which should be started at least two or three hours before the rest of it) to cook it all on a four-burner stove (and microwave, where noted).

Also expect to have to salt it after, because I do not use salt in cooking.

Note: All ginger should be at least as big around as your thumb. Larger is awesome.

Note the second: Some of the bits on where in Middle Earth I'd find the recipes has more to do with my head-canon for a particular AU than actual canon.

Allergy notes: Most of these recipes contain mushrooms. Two of them call for onions and garlic.

Recipes belowCollapse )
